Cheese: The New Drug?

Trigger warning: Delicious, delicious cheese

Before you can “say cheese,” the latest study from Michigan will literally wipe the smile off your face.

The substance that finishes a sandwich, completes a cake and is very much a meal on its own has become the next target of the nanny state scaremongers aka “health professionals.”

Apparently it has been declared that an enjoyment of cheese is equivalent to an addiction on crack. They found that pizza was the most “addictive” of foods and “it has everything to do with the cheese.”

It is a pathetic down spiral of the precautionary principle to apply the same rules for two completely different products. Not only does it trivialize the actual impact of cocaine, it gives governments perfect legitimacy to ban, tax or regulate the daily consumption choices of individuals.

Classifying foods like cheese as an “addiction,” removes all forms of personal responsibility in the daily decisions of consumers. Governments are given the legitimacy to literally pick out our food because we are incapable of choosing wisely for ourselves.

The same goes for the recent proposals to legislate a tax on sugar.

Solving real health problems has turned into a challenge for governments, rather than consumers to solve. Yet the real solution; creating healthy alternatives to sugar or cheese require less government control, not more of it. The boom in the health food industry for example, is a result of  the opening of international trade. In other words – it is thanks to the restrictions on governments, not the government’s restrictions that people can choose be healthier than before.

A grown up population who earns the income to enter a supermarket deserves the right to be as healthy or as unhealthy as they like. Companies reserve the right to supply what they see fit, alternating according to the principles of consumer sovereignty.

Nanny statists could learn a lesson or two from Marie Antoinette. It’s it what the people want, then let them eat [cheese] cake.
