What is illicit tobacco?

What is illicit tobacco?

Idk but there is this many of it: Okay. So. Today’s KPMG report identifies these types of illicit tobacco… Counterfeit cigarettes: fake versions of real brands. Unbranded loose tobacco: it’s unbranded loose leaf tobacco that is not in cigarette form. Non-domestic cigarettes (legal): importing or bringing in foreign cigarettes duty-free when you come back from not-Australia (which is legal if there’s less than fifty cigarettes, or if there’s more and you pay tax on them). You can tell they’re not Australian if they glorify dictators instead of health conditions….

The Plain Packaging Study They Didn’t Want You To See

The Plain Packaging Study They Didn’t Want You To See

Last week, nanny statists in Ireland released a “press release” claiming one of their studies demonstrated evidence for plain-packaging. Funnily enough though, they refused to release the actual study. That’s right, they tried to their so called “research” secret. Now we know why. A leaked copy of the study has shown the exact opposite of what nanny state advocates claim. The study was of the usual sort –  teenagers were shown cigarette packs and asked leading questions with the predictable result that teenagers think ugly packs look ugly. Christopher Snowdon explains: If asked…

Tobacco control is about control – not tobacco

Tobacco control is about control – not tobacco

Tobacco control has never been about protecting the health of smokers. Not one policy – not a single one – that has ever pushed up the price of tobacco, restricted who can purchase tobacco, limited who can sell tobacco, abolished the right to advertise or even brand tobacco products, banned flavours of tobacco, and outlawed the use of tobacco in private or in public locations, or presence of certain people, has ever been designed, approved, or implemented with the well-being of smokers in mind. Historically, this might have been more…

Plain Packaging WTO Woes Grow: Indonesia Also Says No

Plain Packaging WTO Woes Grow: Indonesia Also Says No

Indonesia has joined the burgeoning international movement against Australia’s plain packaging laws. The World Trade Organisation has announced that Indonesia “had made a formal request for consultations with Australia” over plain packaging. The controversial policy has already pushed Honduras, Ukraine, Cuba and the Dominican Republic to ask the WTO to intervene in the dispute over the world’s most tyrannical tobacco packaging laws. These tobacco-supplying nations argue that plain packaging laws create illegal obstacles to world trade, breaching intellectual property rights and international trade rules. With Indonesia initiating dispute resolution proceedings,…

Honduras Takes Plain Packaging Fight to WTO

Honduras Takes Plain Packaging Fight to WTO

Plain packaging is firmly back on the international agenda, with Honduras joining Ukraine in pushing the World Trade Organisation to set up a dispute resolution panel over the worlds most ridiculous tobacco control measure. Tobacco producing nations, including the Dominican Republic and Cuba, argue that plain packaging laws create illegal obstacles to world trade. Australia’s obsession with infantilising smokers has seen Canberra and the High Court bluntly refusing to acknowledge that preventing an entire industry from branding its products is a plain infringement of intellectual property. Australia has so far…

Thank You Smokers!

Thank You Smokers!

You’ve seen smoke free zones before – but when was the last time you saw a free smoke zone? Today’s National Thank You Smokers Day event in Brisbane would have been the first time for many. A group of volunteers in the Queen St Mall crowdfunded cigarettes to offer to adult smokers, and handed out fliers with information about the taxes on tobacco. Of course, the protest in no way promoted smoking or smoking-related products – the only promotion going on was of gratitude to smokers for their disproportionately huge…

Hilarious Satire: Fighting Smokers Our Taxing Duty

Hilarious Satire: Fighting Smokers Our Taxing Duty

An excellent satire from New Zealand: We, Tariana Turia, Tribune of the People, duly and legally elected by a small proportion of a small proportion of those same people, do hereby pronounce and proclaim, we are appalled. And with the power vested in us as Associate Minister of Health for the realm of Aotearoa New Zealand, a position attained through political expedience rather than by any perception of merit, we shall act. Our subjects may recall that in the Year of our Lord 2011 we issued the “Wag That Finger…

How to Use Public Health to Control Everything

How to Use Public Health to Control Everything

Via our good friend Dr Julie Novak at the IPA, this piece from Laissez Faire Club on How to Use Public Health to Control Everything  is a must read: Some extracts: And here is the rabbit in the hat: social justice. “Social justice,” writes Bernard Turnock, “is the foundation of public health.” Since social justice is a subjective notion, somebody has to decide what it is and what it requires. So public health experts naturally want to assume the role of the philosopher-king. In Plato’s utopia, the philosopher-king rules paternalistically and tyrannically…

Labor gov running out of ways to punish smokers

Labor gov running out of ways to punish smokers

Siobhan Harris writes: Many youths have been bemoaning Rudd’s recently announced incremental tax grabs rises. Many cigarettes will cost almost a dollar each, which is sure to hit Gen Y’s particularly hard. Or so I thought. As we are often reminded, when one door closes, another door opens. This open door comes in the form of lucrative employment, the potential for social mobility and a community support network. It will bring all of us closer together. Yes, I’m talking about black market tobacco, obviously. I know what you’re thinking, it’s…
